Gracie Square takes place in a cardboard reconstruction of the residency belonging to the Norwegian UN delegation in New York, where the filmmaker lived as a teenager. The scenography frames an exploration of Norwegian diplomacy’s aesthetics and rituals, approached through a playful, critical lens on her childhood. The characters include an ambassador, his daughter, a special envoy (played by the filmmaker), and other unnamed figures. Each scene utilizes the space differently, reflecting its roles as a private home and a sphere of political representation.

Rather than interviewing her father while developing the script, the filmmaker observed him from a distance, transcribing speeches available on the UN’s YouTube channel and editing excerpts from his X posts and other online materials. This method allows for an abstract portrait of diplomacy through public and personal memory. The cardboard set pays homage to expressionist film and modernist idealism while also alluding to a fragile facade. The use of young actors and performative elements from drag invites questions about power and representation.
