This self-produced short film explores the performance of femininity with an internalized male gaze. The film follows a character navigating a cityscape, catching her reflection in various surfaces. She eventually attempts to break free from her hyper self-awareness. The visual language of the film appropriates imagery from art and film history inspecting femininity, subjectivity, and the self portrait in different ways —such as Frida Kahlo’s “Self-Portrait with Cropped Hair” (1940), pre-Raphaelite “Ophelia” (1851), Cindy Sherman’s “Untitled Film Stills” (1977-1980), and Agnes Varda’s feature film “Cleo from 5-7” (1962). The project builds on Judith Butler’s notion of gender as a societal construct and Laura Mulvey’s notion of the male gaze. Currently in post-production.
